While having a reflective conversation with Nancy Cutler at Groton Elementary, I was privileged to observe her students using the program called, TUNEin™ to READING. When I entered the room, each student was sitting at a laptop wearing headphones and operating the keyboard. Nothing too exciting here, I know. But what I heard was awesome. Each one of the students was singing a different song outloud. Too cool!
TUNEin™ to READING is a reading intervention tool for grades 3-12. Nancy has participated in the training and highly recommends this research based intervention. Here is a brief explanation of the joy experienced when using this program, "Music is the catalyst behind this breakthrough success: students sing with all of their heart and soul, striving to achieve a high score, and in the process improve their reading. Unlike “skill and drill” exercises, TUNEin™ to
READING breathes life and joy into learning, leveraging lasting gains in vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. The software is scientifically based and research proven with literacy experts agreeing: it’s extraordinary!"
Check it out.

This sounds like a great program. I do not teach reading. I teach math, but deal with students everyday who struggle to read. I will definitely inform my Special Education and Reading teachers about this program. It sounds like it is worth checking into.
Hey, I like the idea of this program. Do you have any online programs that students can use? I know that I could used this program with several of my students. I'll have to look into this program.
What a great idea! I teach science, but even at the middle school level there are many students who struggle with reading each day. I would have never of thought to put reading practice with music, but that does make sense. Any time we can making teaching more fun it is beneficial to the students.
I think this program sounds great! At first I was hesitant on how it could be helpful with a room full of kids singing all at once. Then after going to the TUNEin to READING website and going through all their research data and how it has been implemented into classrooms it seems to be very impressive. I was also curious of what songs it had on the program and it does seem to have quite the list. I can see my first graders using this and improving their fluency level even it they aren’t behind. I will pass this information on in school.
What a great idea! I know how many kids struggle with reading fluency, especially those in special education. There's another computer-based fluency program out there called Read Naturally.
This sounds like an awesome program. Fun and beneficial. Can't wait to study it more. Thanks for the insight.
I wonder how it works being next to other rooms with the cacophony of voices occurring as the room next door takes a spelling test.
Just an observation...
Wow! I will have to look into this more. It may be a great resource for Reading Recovery or kids on an IEP.
Great idea! And something we should be looking into. It is, unfortunately, not free so the our district would have to find the $$$.
I think this program sounds great! Music can help in learning so many things and using it to improve reading skills is a fantastic idea. I think a similar program would be an excellent idea in foreign language learning as well.

This sounds like a fun intervention, especially for older students...I think it would actually be great for younger students! They would love it! I plan to check it out, and pass the info. along to our Title staff.
